Welcome to the Scud Fest weekend featuring the premier XTERRA Charlottesville triathlon and other adventurous off-road events at Walnut Creek Park. Come get Down and Dirty!

The community of North Garden, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and just a ten minute, scenic drive outside of the City of Charlottesville, welcomes you to a mountain bikers and trail runners playground with over twelve miles of epic singletrack surrounding a scenic lake at Walnut Creek Park. With the trails balanced with everything you expect from East Coast terrain, including roller coaster twisty turns, a couple challenging climbs, typically shallow creek crossings, rock gardens and enough natural obstacles in between, you will not want to miss this amazing XTERRA venue! For those starting out, the sprint athletes will do one loop and the more experienced XTERRA athletes will do two loops. New this year will be two distance trail runs and a SUPerman Run! Not sure what these are? Check out the race information page for more details.

Late August, in the little mountains of Virginia is typically serene with occasional cooler mornings indicating fall is around the corner. It will then warm up to it’s typical summer daytime temperatures. When hosting quality off-road events, Walnut Creek Park is a competitors dream of racing and fun. It is also a great place to bring the family for the day with its 18-hole frisbee golf course, a wide, lakefront beach, picnic tables plus grills, and a new playground for the younger kids.

From over twenty-three vineyards, including Wisdom Oaks Winery just a quarter mile south from the park entrance, Thomas Jeffersons home, Monticello, strolling through the University of Virginia grounds or the outdoor downtown mall, to a romantic evening dining or listening to a wide selection of live music, there is a vast array of experiences awaiting you in the area. Come race XTERRA Charlottesville or the Walnut Creek Sprint Off-Road Tri and immerse yourself in the Virginia experience!

XTERRA CHARLOTTESVILLE IS PROUDLY NAMED A MEMORIAL RACE FOR SCOTT “SCUD” SCUDAMORE.

With blessings from the big Kahuna, Dave Nicholas, at XTERRA, XTERRA Charlottesville will now be an official Scott “Scud” Scudamore memorial race and the weekends events will be known as Scud Fest. For those who did not know Scott Scudamore, he was a great friend and tireless supporter and helper for all of Charlottesville Multisports races. Scott also contributed immensely to XTERRA, EX2Adventures, the Charlottesville Tri Club, CAMBC(Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Club) and Trails For Youth. His legacy unfolds how he believed in making quality races in his community and helping his friends with similar passions.

Since Scott found the sport of XTERRA in 2007, he had become one of XTERRA’s most passionate ambassadors and competitors. After recently moving to the Charlottesville area to retire with his wife, Margaret, Scott found time in his fun filled retirement schedule to team up with Kate Lucas of Charlottesville Multisports

in late 2012 to be the co-race director for the 2013 XTERRA Charlottesville. Both Kate and Scott were very passionate to make it a great race. “We loved working on it together”, said Lucas. “Designing the new XTERRA Charlottesville mountain bike and run courses was a real treat with Scud because his enthusiasm to make it a great race equally matched my own. We found how we complimented each other really well and recognized the fun we were having working together as a team.”

Tragically, on December 28th, 2013, Scott passed away from an infection sustained as a result of a life changing mountain bike accident that had taken place on September 22, 2013. For more details about Scott “Scud” Scudamore please check out his website at www.scudfries.org. It was created by Scud’s army of friends after his accident and is filled with his story along with many of his friends adventure stories with him. Scott was larger than life and is greatly missed by all who knew him.

In Memoriam, XTERRA Charlottesville will be officially named XTERRA Charlottesville: Scott Scudamore Memorial. The Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Club will remain the official beneficiary of the race. Scott will also be honored in a few other appropriate and fun ways throughout the Scud Fest weekend - like having his official decadent Scud Fries cooked on site along with some surprise contests! Don’t worry, in true Scud fashion, it will be a weekend filled with adventure, fun and laughter and not one to be missed. We’d love to have you, your family and friends come celebrate Scud’s life with us at XTERRA Charlottesville!
